From 1969 to 1972 he was Research Fellowship at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University of Köln, directed by Prof. W. Stoffel. From 1972 to 1974 he received an International Postdoctoral Fellowship and was visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health, Education and Welfare, National Heart and Lung Institute, Bethesda, directed by D.S. Fredrickson. From 1974 to 1977 he was member of the research staff at the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Central Laboratory at the University Clinics in Köln. From 1977 to 1983 he was head of Central Laboratory of the University Clinics in Münster.
Prof. Assmann is currently director of the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, and director of Institute of Arteriosclerosis Research at the University of Münster.
Prof. Assmann's research focuses on Lipoproteins, lipid transport and metabolism, medical genetics; biotechnology, academic and industrial; epidemiology of atherosclerosis.
From 1989 to 1990 he was a President of the German Society of Arteriosclerosis. He is currently member of the "Rheinisch-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften", section for natural sciences, en¬gineering and business; Selection Committee, IOC Olympic Prize; Association of American Physicians; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP); German Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina"; Atherosclerosis Society, Turkey; Atherosclerosis Society, Poland. From 2003 Prof. Assmann is Executive Director of the International Task Force for Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease and from 2004 he is Vice President of the European Society for Cardiovascular Prevention. Prof. Assmann is author of more than 940 scientific articles, reviews and books.
